ARMY, OIF/OEF COMBAT VETERAN
My name is Justo Baltasar. I was born in Los Angeles, CA. I joined the U.S Army as an Infantryman in 2003 to give back to my country for what it had done for my family. My first tour in Iraq I was part of the Recon platoon. I lost half my platoon to sniper fire and suicide car bombs. During my deployment to Afghanistan I lived on the side of the mountain and we were mortared every night and walked everywhere because of the terrain. I received the Bronze Star w/ Valor for doing my job as a machine gunner in an ambush. I served 6 years 2 months in the Army. After I left the Army I was a lost soul without a purpose. I became an alcoholic, a coward, a victim, I blamed other people for my problems and I isolated myself from society. I went down a dark path of pain, loneliness, anger and 3 attempts to commit suicide.
Two months ago I received a phone call from my old squad leader’s wife out of nowhere she told me she knew a place that could help me. The place was Camp Hope. Camp Hope saved my life and helped me heal and stay sober. I now love myself and for the first time in my life I am joyful and I don’t have to hide behind a mask. I hope my story can reach a veteran out there that has seen the ugly side of war get the help he or she needs and know that he or she doesn’t have to fight this new war with ourselves alone.
